What is OEE?

OEE is the acronym for Overall Equipment Effectiveness, which is a method of calculating the effective performance of manufacturing equipment. It is the most widely used measurement in industry as it combines the losses arising from process downtime, equipment running inefficiency and the impact of rejects/reworks, into a single number. It is particularly important in the process of maintenance performance improvement as one of the key elements of OEE is equipment availability. A good OEE measurement system will incorporate reporting tools to review downtime by category, type and cause of stoppage by both graphical trend and in detail.

PRIME supports the use of OEE, and provides FREE OF CHARGE to clients a software system ("OEE Manager") for capturing the necessary input data, calculating OEE, Downtime, Throughput and Quality performance values, and presenting them in tabular or graphical representation. The underlying data is also presented in the wide range of analysis reports such as MTBF, analysis of failure causes, etc. The system also comprises modules for CMMS work order management, PPM management, Stores management, tooling management, FMECA analysis, Root Cause Elimination, and small projects management. The system is available to companies that are not PRIME clients for a nominal charge.

Why use OEE?

There are a several reasons for measuring OEE as a cornerstone of any performance improvement project :

1. OEE incorporates the 3 primary areas of performance loss

            - Loss of equipment availability through all causes (eg setup, breakdown, lack of labour etc)

            - Loss through rework or reject

            - Loss through ineffective equipment or people performance

2. OEE integrates the performance of plant with the performance of people

3. OEE Is multi-factorial, therefore supports a ‘trade-off’ approach to performance improvement initiatives

4. OEE provides a strategic level view of factory performance for senior management as well as cell level performance for line management

5. OEE provides a common view of performance, from Senior Management to line operative

6. OEE provides a common focus for objectives setting in all manufacturing disciplines (production, engineering, logistics, quality)

7. OEE Is used by virtually all ‘world class’ companies

8. OEE provides the central element of a ‘performance-balanced scorecard’ of KPIs
