Welcome to the PRIME website!

PRIME Engineering Services provides consultancy support to manufacturing companies in Northern England, and supplies the "OEE Manager" software to companies around the world. PRIME helps manufacturers to set up the infrastructure and systems to bring about improved plant performance, both from improving equipment uptime overall, and by improving maintenance effectiveness.  These web pages will explain some of the philosophies that underpin PRIME's approach to performance improvement, evaluate some of the benefits you could expect to realise, and how PRIME works to deliver the objectives. You will also be able to obtain the software system "OEE Manager", provided free of charge to PRIME clients. If you wish to find out more about "OEE Manager" immediately, click on the icon above, otherwise navigate to it through the pages in the website.

The site has been designed for production and engineering managers who are interested in maximising the performance of their plant and equipment. Hopefully, it will provide you with ideas for improving the performance of your manufacturing equipment, through reducing downtime and improving reliability.

You will be able to find out how to calculate the potential financial benefits for your company by improving equipment performance, by implementing effective measurement systems and by improving uptime. It will provide you with some tools to measure performance and convert the data collected into an effective improvement programme.

World Class performance isn't achieved by accident.

There are a number of essential steps in the journey to achieving high levels of effectiveness, and all of them are addressed in the website. These key stages are:

        a) Become aware - of the current position, and of the potential benefits to be achieved

        b) Establish an improvement culture - in Production and Maintenance, based on common goals and measurements

        c) Install appropriate systems and tools - that are simple, focussed, and apply across the board

        d) Measure and control - target for high performance

Real success will only be achieved if targets across manufacturing are aligned, and if the inter-dependence of Production and Maintenance is properly recognised. In many manufacturing operations, equipment breakdown represents less than one third of all downtime, and downtime only represents half of all manufacturing losses, yet breakdowns are perceived by senior management to be the only controllable area of loss. Dramatic improvements in performance can be obtained quickly and at virtually no cost if the true causes of all production losses are determined, and if Maintenance is given a constructive role in the improvement process along with their Production colleagues.

In many companies the maintenance function is seen to be no more than a necessary evil which adds cost but little value. It is seen to be the cause of many of the ills of the enterprise, responsible for equipment failures, spoilt product and inefficient processing, and all of this at a cost which the enterprise finds hard to bear. Fortunately there are proven ways to turn the maintenance beast from being a blood-sucking drain on resources to becoming a positive contributor to bottom-line profitability. Successful companies realised the distinct and unambiguous link between excellent asset performance and the need for effective maintenance systems a long time ago. They also discovered that they could have performance improvement and cost reduction at the same time.  Without exception, the world class performers have developed maintenance strategies and practices which positively assist in their competitiveness, and which fit with the new, lean manufacturing concepts which have been developed in the past 10 years. These strategies will fit equally well in small and medium-sized enterprises as in large companies; in fact their implementation is often easier and swifter for SME's because of the lack of corporate inertia and the closeness of the business managers to the operational heart of the enterprise.

PRIME's approach to developing the optimised maintenance strategy for a client starts with assessing the key business drivers, establishing the essential performance measures and using these to design the maintenance practices that will best deliver the improvements required.

In the Free Maintenance Audit that PRIME offers, you will receive an assessment of the present total cost of maintenance in your company, a comparison of the effectiveness of the maintenance service against Best Practice comparators, and a set of actions for addressing the areas that are impacting negatively on both performance and cost. There is no commitment to use PRIME further in the improvement process, but if you wish to do so you will find that you will receive a service that is both professional, focussed and extremely cost-effective.

With the "OEE Manager" Software system, provided free of charge to PRIME clients, you will be able to track the reasons for loss of equipment performance, analyse the underlying causes, and design the most appropriate response. As well as a full capability for managing OEE, the software includes full CMMS and Tooling management functions, a system for maintenance FMECA, and a system for managing a continuous improvement programme. There is a summary of some of the features in the website, and you can obtain a free fully-functioning download demo on request.

You will find that the cost to obtain assistance from PRIME with the design and implementation of a system for improved maintenance performance is extremely competitive. Additionally, the benefits will often be seen beyond maintenance, in improved production efficiencies, housekeeping and reduction in reject rates.

PRIME was established in 2000 by Frank Chambers, with the objective of providing a source of professional support in the area of maintenance management to companies that had historically not structured their maintenance operations for maximum performance, at a cost that SMEs could afford. Frank had previously spent over 30 years directing engineering and maintenance operations in a capital-intensive, highly-regulated industrial environment, during which time he also successfully managed MRP-2 implementations and business re-engineering/lean manufacturing projects.

The "OEE Manager" software suite was developed to provide companies who would not otherwise have a financial justification for making a large investment in data acquisition, but who need to implement an effective improvement programme, with a unique set of tools to measure and manage equipment and maintenance performance.

PRIME's customer base is largely, although not exclusively, drawn from SME companies who wish to improve plant reliability by implementing people and technology solutions, but to do so without adding complexity, buzz words or added cost to the business of achieving improved bottom-line contribution from maintenance. Additionally, "OEE Manager" is supplied to companies via the Internet, when the required implementation assistance is provided by the use of specially-structured Implementation Guides, backed up by e-mail and telephone support
